If there is one thing Germany takes seriously it is their wine and beer. Since I have a fair bit of time to enjoy both while on this side of the ocean, I thought I would share my exploration with everyone. I haven't restricted myself to German wines since I just buy what catches my eye, but they all come from grapes regardless of what variety or on which continent they may be grown. So, without any more idle chatter, on to the sampling of libations:

![]() Koala Valley 1998 South Eastern Australia | The first bottle I sampled was an dry red Australian wine called Koala Valley. Generally I prefer white wines to red, but this bottle was excellent. So good that I purchased two more actually. The flavor was dry, but did not bite as some wines can. The winery describes the flavor as "spicy", and I would agree with this description. It is flavorful, but it doesn't linger and taint the flavors of your dinner. It will serve well with any meal and you will still remember what the food tasted like. If you like typical bottles of cabernet sauvernion, this will dissapoint you as too dull. If a good merlot is more to your tastes I expect you will enjoy this greatly. |
| The second sampling was a French bottle from the winery of Baron de Gravelines. This dry white wine titled Bordeaux Blanc Sec was good, but a bit sharp and biting for my tastes. I will recommend it as a dinner wine for meals with delicate flavor since the wine itself has a taste much like white grape juice with an alcohol bite and leaves little after taste. |

![]() Gabbia Doro Merlot 1998 Venice Italy | The Gabbia Doro Merlot gives the first impression, like many merlot wines, of being very fruity. There is little or no bite to this particular bottle which makes for pleasant drinking. Due to the smooth flavor this wine would go well with a meal with grilled beef or poultry. The tastes of the wine will improve the simple flavors of a good steak wonderfully. |
| Servus comes to me from Osterreich (Austria). This is a sweet dry wine. Too sweet for meals, so I'd call it a desert wine for those that can't handle an extremely sugary Reissling. |

![]() Anselfelder Lieblich 1998 Mainz Germany | This is a pleasantly mild red wine. Its is slightly fruity but not sweet. Once again, this is a bottle I would buy again. It was totally enjoyable. |
